CAREER PROSPECTS IN MARINE ENGINEERING

Three quarters of the earths surface is surrounded by water and for that reason itself Marine engineering is a very exciting and challenging field for those who are passionate about sea and are fond of working with tools. Even though waterways are comparatively used less for traveling, above 80% of the goods transportation happens through sea. For international export and import of freights, countries mainly depend on ships and other water vessels. Marine Engineering is the most basic profession as far as ships and navigation is concerned.

Marine engineering is a branch of Engineering that deals with nautical architecture and science. The term 'Marine Engineering' is meant for research conducted in oceans and coastal or inland waters connected to the sea. Marine Engineering courses deal with construction and maintenance of ships and other sailing vessels.

Marine Engineers have the complete responsibility of the ship's technical management. They are responsible for selecting the ships' machinery, which may include diesel engines, steam turbines, gas turbines; and for the design of mechanical, electrical, fluid and control systems throughout the vessel. They are the members of a ship's crew who are in charge for managing a team of marine technicians and craftspeople. The construction, operations and maintenance of the engine room are the main duties of a Marine engineer.

A four year BE in Marine Engineering is the basic educational qualification required to become a Marine engineer. This is a career that offers vast job opportunities including off-shore jobs and the most attractive part is its huge remuneration and NRI status. Many Indian and foreign institutes offer courses in Marine Engineering. Immense job opportunities are awaiting Marine engineers and they have nearly 100% placement rates. The demand for Marine Engineers in public and private shipping companies has risen sharply, with the increase in international global sea traffic.

Eligibility

BE in Marine Engineering / Nautical Science and PG Diploma in Mechanical Engineering are the basic qualifications to become a Marine Engineer. The minimum educational qualifications for pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Marine Engineering or Nautical science is plus two or equivalent with high percentage of marks in science subjects such as Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. These courses are of 4 years duration. Chennai School of Ship Management offer Alternate Training Scheme (ATS) of three years to become a Marine Engineer.

Good health is required to be a good Marine Engineer. Physical fitness is a must and there are certain medical norms that need to be met to get entry into the Marine Engineering courses. The minimum height should be 150cms with correlated weight and proportionate chest with minimum 5-cm expansion. He should also pass a medical fitness test for sea service under standard norms and with eyesight 6/6 with no colour blindness.

Those who have BE in Marine engineering and a passion for academics can pursue post graduation (i.e ME in Marine engineering) which is of two years duration and Ph.D. Educational qualification for M.E and Ph.D, is BE in Marine Engineering and ME in Engineering respectively. Many institutes in India and abroad offer these courses.

Personal skill:

In order to become a Marine engineer, a person should possess some essential personal attributes. Good English language proficiency and physical fitness is a must. They should have excellent technical knowledge, math and IT skills. A marine engineer should have organising quality, team spirit and practical thinking and common sense. He should possess an aptitude to be calm under pressure and should know how to manage the situation. They should have an awareness of health and safety procedures. Moreover he should enjoy sea travel and should be dedicated to his job.

Job Prospects & Career Options

Marine Engineers are also employed in the areas of designing, research and consultancy. They have opportunities in designing and building firms and even in the teaching or training profession. They can also opt for any job that a mechanical or electrical engineering graduate hunt for.

Marine Engineers have lucrative career options abroad also. An internationally recognized organization, recruits freshers and trainees with almost no experience. The bureau deals with developing rules based on principles of naval architecture, marine engineering and related subjects. Other countries like France and U.K also recruit young marine engineers.

Remuneration

Marine Engineering is one of the well-paid careers in the field of engineering. At the entry level itself, a Marine engineer receives excellent pay package. A junior engineer can earn around Rs 25,000 – 30,000 per month in Indian ships and around Rs 74,000 in foreign ships. A chief engineer will get up to Rs 1,85,000 per month.

Interview Tips

In addition to doing research and practicing your answers to common interview questions, you should be aware of general interview etiquette. Remember the following points when preparing for an interview:

Review your resume, and make sure that you can explain everything on it. Arrive at the interview ten minutes early to give yourself an opportunity to collect your thoughts and relax. Be aware that many employers will have their receptionists record the time you came in. If you rush in at the last minute, an employer may have serious concerns about your ability to arrive on time for a normal day at work.

Get a good night's sleep before your interview. You will think more effectively in the interview if you are rested. Also, yawning will not impress anyone. Eat something before the interview. If you are worried about your stomach growling, you will not be able to concentrate on the questions.

Dress appropriately for the position that you are applying to. Try to dress like the people who work there would dress if they were representing their organization at some function. If you are unsure about what to wear, always err on the side of being too dressed up.

Make sure that you are clean, neat, and well-groomed. Interviewers do notice your appearance, and first impressions are critical in an interview situation.

DE-STRESS MANTRAS

“Stress is usually caused by external factors and I use yoga and meditation to deal with it. In order to disconnect I just close myself with my family and my children. It is very important for an individual to realize that at the end of the day nothing is as important as themselves. The best way to deal with stress is never ever to let other peoples expectations of you overtake your wishes for yourself.”

How to increase Adsense CTR

How to increase Adsense CTR

How do I increase my CTR ? Why I am not getting sufficient clicks? Why my earning from adsense is poor though I have got sufficient page impressions? How do I maximize my earning from adsense? – These are the common question asked by not only newbie but so-called adsense gurus also.

What is CTR.? CTR or Click-through rate = the number of clicks that an ad receives / the number of times the ad, ad unit or page is shown. To increase your earning from adsense you have to increase your CTR. High CTR means a higher payment. Now the question is how do I increase our CTR so that we can maximize our adsense earning. If you are able to increase CTR properly, adsense can generate a very large and healthy income for you.

Keyword-rich content

Adsense delivers relevant Ads that are targeted to your site and your site content. So your site should be incorporated with important keywords. The adsense ads are relevant to your site’s topic. If the ads are not relevant to the topic, your visitors will skip to another site without making any click. Write keyword rich content especially for the title and first few lines of the page.

Choosing color

Blending color always perform well. Blend the color of your adsense ads with the back ground color of the content. Thereby you can increase your CTR rate. Because the visitors will think the adsense ads are the parts of the page. The visitors can not discern the ads from the content. If the background color of the page is white then adsense ads should be white.

Placement of Ads

Placement of adsense ads is one of the important factors to increase the CTR. The position of the adsense ads should be in a place from where it can attract the visitors. You may place adsense ads on the top and middle of the site and try to make it as far as possible like a part of the site. If your content is large place the adsense ads in the middle, other wise on the top and in the sidebars.

Using Border less ads

There are different sized and different designed adsense ads. Adsense ads may be with border or without border. Always chose a borderless one. If the adsense ads are borderless the visitors may be deceived and they will consider the ads as the parts of the content and you will get click consequently your CTR will be increased.

Using ad format

Choosing of right format can dramatically change your CTR. Avoid traditional formats. It is proven fact that large rectangles (336X280 and 300X250) square (250X250) are high CTR ad formats. On the other hand skyskapper (120X600) banner (200 X 60) are low CTR formats.
